Six Finger Satellite – “Paranormalized”
a little further into their output, this release sees an increase in the presence of harsher/more metallic guitar tones and a slight reduction of earlier “Devo-isms”… not that synths aren’t still present, but at this stage the band seemed to use them more prominently on “remix”-type releases like the “Clone Theory” 12″ (which I’ll eventually post if I ever get around to buying a working turntable)… speaking of vinyl, from what I can tell this particular album is only available from Sub Pop in that format, so the vinyl-impaired like myself can take advantage of the opportunity to

Harry Pussy – s.t.
since their “… Shit on a Puerto Rican Whore” 12″ proved to be one of our most popular posts, here’s a follow-up with their eponymous release.

Xysma – “Swarming/Fata/Morbidity”
devout readers will know that we’ve covered most of this Finnish band’s mid-period material, when they were transitioning from death/grind through doom, before they eventually wound up doing more-or-less straight-ahead rock. this trio of early releases sees them in full on grind mode, in all their Napalm Death/Sore Throat-influenced glory. one file, bundling their infamous “Swarming of the Maggots” demo, their “Above the Mind of Morbidity” 12″ ep and their “Fata Morgana” 7″.

Righteous Pigs – “Stress Related + Live and Learn”
two grind (or perhaps pre-grind) classics for the price of one from Mitch Harris’ pre-Napalm Death band.

The Meters – “Rejuvenation”
having a bit of a “funk bands with funny names” day here at the Sector… ok, there isn’t really anything funny about the name “The Meters” (unless you want to take it a referrence to their sex organs I guess)… anyway heading out for a roadtrip soon and I don’t think they need any introduction, so…

MSFB – “First Take”
to the best of my memory, the acronym stood for “Mother Funkin’ Sons of Bitches”… and it’s as apt a name as any

Altered States – two more
… when I posted Altered States’ Mosaic back in June, I said I’d post these as well if anyone asked for them. no one did. but since I’m pretty shitty about leaving comments/requests on the blogs I frequent, it only stands to reason that I’m not alone on that front. so maybe someone will appreciate these. or not. or, knowing my luck, they’ll already have been posted elsewhere. but even if that’s the case, it can’t posibly diminish their greatness. so, comment-shilling aside:

V/A – “This is Phoenix not the Circle Jerks”
a fine mid-80s compilation LP on Placebo Records featuring the likes of Mighty Sphincter, Conflict, Zany Guys, Sun City Girls and JFA. when I found a copy in the mid-90s I grabbed it mainly for the SCG tracks since I was heavily into them at the time. looking back on it now it strikes me as being a bit of an… odd combination of bands. it’s also worth noting the that the Conflict here-in is not the U.K. anarcho-punk group, but rather a U.S. band who also used the name. at any rate, it’s a fun blast from the past that’s well worth another listen or three.

Dead C – “Tusk”
I likely don’t need to provide much in the way of an introduction to this group for any seasoned readers – their importance in the grand scheme of all things indie and noise has been well documented long before I was here. as is my wont lately, I’m probably better off to let the music speak for itself.

The Surfaris – “Fun City, USA / Wipe Out”
today we give a shout-out to the ailing Eek The Cat with a post that would be (and since we’ve been to lazy to read all of their archives, maybe already has been) at home there. compiling two of their albums on one CD, this band is apparently still active today, in two different versions no less! this version of the group has released a new disc also called “Wipe Out”, containing two cuts from the original album plus some newly-penned material. this version of the band also has some of it’s own recent material available. in the meantime, you can hear the ‘64 and ‘66 releases
Derek Bailey – “guitar, drums n’ bass”
interesting find from a record fair today, in which infamous improv guitarist Bailey is joined/accompanied by dn’b programming from DJ Ninj - of whom I’ll admit I’ve never heard, and who is difficult to track down on the web thanks to the proliferation of info on the similarily named “DJ Ninja”… at any rate, despite it’s age (it came out 11 years ago) it’s a worthwhile listen for the crossing of two genres which rarely intersect.
